Most of the Earth's precipitation falls in the tropics, and the fundamental controls of the spatial and temporal distribution of tropical precipitation over monsoon regions and in oceanic convergence zones remain debated. Monsoons have a large impact on society: they affect the water supply of densely populated countries and rapidly growing economies. With projected increases in population and pressure for food and water security, understanding how anthropogenic climate change will affect monsoons is both a priority and a major challenge in climate science, given the highly uncertain future monsoon projections.
This workshop will bring together scientists from diverse disciplines who are actively working on paleo-reconstructions, observations, modeling and theories of monsoons. A primary goal of the workshop is to connect recent advances in these different communities to build a more comprehensive understanding of monsoons and their responses to perturbations across time scales. Key open questions that need collaboration between different disciplines will be identified.
